SBB rail maintenanceConcrete Grinding are renowned as the world leaders in flooring solutions and flatness; and they recently added SBB to their growing list of big-name, satisfied customers.

SBB is famous for its rail network which runs a “futuristic” hovering train service, and as the national transport company of Switzerland it’s one of the most valuable Swiss brands. To ensure that their workshop floor was perfect for maintaining such transportation, Concrete Grinding was called in to help.

“It wasn’t just any old workshop either” said Paul Altham, Technical Manager for Concrete Grinding. “It’s a very advanced maintenance unit where they cater for the upkeep of their innovative trains, and it’s the longest workshop in Switzerland”

Carriages are repaired in the unit, and because the train system is so technologically advanced, it’s imperative that regular checks and routine maintenance can be carried out quickly and safely.

“Huge jacks used to lift trains for maintenance purposes are manoeuvred and operated on the ground area” said Paul.  “The jack manufacturer required a bespoke floor spec, which included a very specific transverse slope of 1.653% and maximum longitudinal difference of +/- 1mm from datum.”

The flooring solution experts were specified asked to carry out:

  • Whole aisle width grinding 1.512m wide to a total length of approximately 350m
  • Whole aisle width grinding 0.783m wide to a total length of approximately 60m.

They also needed to grind particularly small, intricate and somewhat dangerous areas, which needed utmost care and attention to detail.  But it was smooth going for Concrete-Grinding, who used their patented Laser Grinder® XPT to carry out the work.

“The results were fantastic” Paul added. “We worked in collaboration with our German partner BS Bodensysteme GmbH, and we had some tricky narrow areas where there were drops in to the maintenance pit.  But with our technical know-how and expertise we easily dealt with them.”

“To highlight how big SBB are, they’re not just the largest travel and transport company in Switzerland, they’re also one of the country’s biggest employers too. We left them with a floor more than suitable for a firm of their stature.”

It’s a project that showcases perfectly how Concrete Grinding’s Laser Grinding equipment can be utilised in other ways than just narrow aisle floor flatness grinding.
